Box Score The College of Staten Island women's basketball team soared to their third straight win and their fifth in the last six tries despite some early injuries, taking an 84-57 win over John Jay College in CUNYAC competition at the Sports & Recreation Center earlier this evening on CSI's 5th Annual Faculty/Staff Appreciation Night. The win lifted the Dolphins' record to 8-8 and 5-1 in CUNYAC play, while the Bloodhounds remained winless at 0-16, 0-7, respectively.
The Dolphins suffered an early setback when four seconds in, CSI's Allie Shanahan went down hard with an injury, not returning to the game. Despite the early blow, CSI didn't skip a beat, getting to a 10-2 start over the game's first 3:20. CSI extended to a double-digit lead a few minutes later on a pair of Kristen Panariello free-throws. Later, a 12-0 Dolphins run, highlighted by a three-point basket by senior Mallory Ameneiros and a pair of Olivia Tierno lay-ups, gave CSI a big, 32-10, lead with 7:59 to go in the frame.
CSI continued the barrage, getting up their lead to as many as 30, 42-12, before the Bloodhounds would end the frame on a 9-2 run, spearheaded by back-to-back three-pointers by Claire Prince.
The Dolphins took another shot when freshman Caitlyn Johnson missed significant time with an injury due to accidental contact in the paint. Johnson would return, but only played 12 minutes. Meanwhile CSI ballooned their lead to as many as 35, 65-30, with 12:42 to go, before coasting to the 84-57 final.
CSI had five players finish in double figures, shooting 43.5% from the floor. Tierno led all scorers with 21 markers, adding four assists and four steals. Katelyn Hepworth tallied 19 points with an astounding 16 rebounds, while Panariello garnered 13 points. CSI's Danielle McLaughlin and Ameneiros each collected 10 points. John Jay's Jessica Lirio was outstanding for the Bloodhounds, finishing with a game-high 28 points, adding 10 rebounds.
Upon conclusion of the game, CSI held its rousing 5th Annual Faculty Staff Appreciation ceremony. A total of eight honorees were cited for terrific achievement, and each was presented plaques from members of CSI's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, who spearhead the event. The winners were Louis Blois and Dr. Jane Coffee from the Mathematics Department, Robert Corin from Biology, Donna Scimeca, chair of the CORE program and History Department, Donna Gerstle of Environmental Sciences and the Staten Island Breast Cancer Research Initiative, Irving Robbins of the Engineering, Science & Physics Department, Dina Grant from Academic Advisement, and Kellie Carnevale from CSI Athletics.
CSI gets back to action on Friday, travelling to Hunter College for another CUNYAC test at 5pm.
